Child Therapy

“Where play opens the door to a child’s inner wisdom.”

How can Inner Wisdom Counselling and Wellbeing Help my Child?

At Inner Wisdom Counselling & Wellbeing, we support children aged 12 years and under to feel safe, seen, and heard. Through evidence-based, developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and neuroaffirming therapeutic play, children are gently guided to explore their inner world and reconnect with their strengths

What is Child Therapy?

Our work is:

  • Grounded in Child-Centred Play Therapy (CCPT)
  • Influenced by Synergetic Play Therapy (SPT)
  • Influenced by the AUTPlay® framework
  • Informed by attachment theory, neuroscience and interpersonal neurobiology
  • Trauma-informed, neuroaffirming, strengths-based

We honour the unique inner wisdom of every child and build trusting relationships that foster healing, growth, and connection. Play becomes the language through which children express themselves, process experiences, and build resilience.

Why Inner Wisdom Matters for Your Child?

We believe every child is born with an inner wisdom; a deep, natural sense of what they feel, need, and who they are. This wisdom shows up in their play, their emotions, their behaviour, and even in their silences.

But when children experience stress, emotional overwhelm, or disconnection, that inner voice can become hard to hear. They may struggle to express what’s going on inside or show it through big behaviours that feel confusing or frustrating.

Through therapeutic play, emotional attunement, and a safe, responsive relationship, we help children:

  • Feel emotionally safe and understood
  • Express and process their feelings
  • Reconnect with their inner knowing
  • Strengthen their relationship with themselves and with you.

We use the power of play as a healing language, helping children make sense of their experiences and build emotional resilience from the inside out.

We invite you to read our blog on The Therapeutic Powers of Play: How Play Therapy Helps Children Heal and Grow.

What Parents Can Expect

You are an essential part of your child’s therapeutic journey. We value working alongside you to build emotional safety, understanding, and connection.

Our therapeutic approach includes:

  • Initial parent consultations to understand your child’s needs
  • A child-centred process that moves at the child’s pace
  • Ongoing support and feedback to help you feel confident and connected
  • Relational repair and co-regulation strategies to support attunement at home

Together, we create a space where your child’s emotional world can unfold and be understood without judgment or pressure.

Structure of Sessions

  • Sessions are scheduled in alignment with school terms.
  • Appointments are held at a regular weekly or fortnightly time (same day and time)
  • A minimum of 5 sessions is required when working directly with children. This is both an ethical consideration and ensures safety for children, allowing the therapeutic process to take shape in a consistent and supportive environment.

What Play Therapy Can Support

Play therapy is effective for children experiencing:

  • Emotional difficulties: anxiety, sadness, grief, low self-esteem.
  • Behavioural challenges: aggression, withdrawal, difficulties with self-regulation.
  • Social and relational concerns: peer difficulties, sibling conflict, family relationship challenges.
  • Trauma and adjustment issues: loss, separation, or major life changes.

Outcomes for Children

Through play therapy, children can:

  • Understand and manage big feelings such as anxiety, anger, or sadness.
  • Express emotions when words are difficult, using play as their language.
  • Process trauma or loss in a child-led, emotionally safe way.
  • Navigate behavioural or social challenges with guidance and support.
  • Strengthen secure bonds with parents, caregivers, and peers.
  • Build confidence, self-esteem, and resilience, celebrating their unique strengths.
  • Develop emotional regulation and problem-solving skills through creative exploration.
  • Promote healing and growth by mastering new skills and engaging in imaginative play.
